COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS: Name them one by one

Count Your Many Blessings

With the Spirit within, clothes without, and food to eat, we are more than blessed.  Take for example the video at this link.  In this video, you can see the sense of entitlement that these atheists have in believing that before someone is cast into the flames of damnation that they are entitled to hear the Gospel first.  Hearing the Gospel is a blessing and a privilege, but not  a right.  If you have heard the Gospel, then you are blessed, but GOD is not required to ensure you hear the Gospel.  Hearing the story of Jesus Christ and His plan of redemption is not another right or entitlement that this generation can demand of GOD.  Salvation is far more important than food or clothing.  Those who feel sorry for the temporal starving or naked should realize how much more important are the eternal spiritual needs of these people. However, we should do our best to meet the temporal need in order to share the Gospel and meet the other more important need.

Count Your Many Blessings2I am very thankful that the Gospel was shared with me and that as a result, I have repented of my sins, trusted Jesus with my entire life, and have received the Spirit of GOD’s indwelling.  I believe men have a difficult time accepting the fact that GOD sends people to the flames of eternal punishment, because they have a difficult time accepting how wicked they really are.  Even the most moral person deserves eternal torment in the lake of fire.  I am probably considered by some to be moral, because I have been a faithful spouse, a proponent for truth, and stayed away from all of those “awful sins” as a youth.  However, I know my own thought life.  I have had thoughts of lust and hate.  I have told lies in the past and deceived.  I have been self-centered and thoughtless.   I have no doubt that I have committed far more sins than these, and that there are probably many which I don’t even realize I have committed.  I believe men don’t even realize how much of what they do every day is sin and egregious to GOD. Their lives make Him weep and stir Him to wrath.  In justice, He must judge.  Therefore, we all deserve whatever we get in this life.   Do we deserve all the problems, the wars, the nervous disorders, the loss of loved ones, the torture, the abuse, and the disappointments in this life?  Absolutely.  We also deserve the painful torture of eternal fire.

Count Your Many Blessings3We do not need to spend time writing books for atheists on subjects such as “Why Does GOD Allow Bad Things to Happen to Good People?” or other such endeavors in which we attempt to explain why there are wars, abortions, suffering, famines, cruelty, and evil in the world.  We know why there’s evil in the world.  Mankind.  We are the problem.  Atheists complain against GOD for the starvation of children in Africa, but then they vote to kill babies in America. We brought the curse on this planet.  We are the reason that animals must be eaten now, and yet organizations like P.E.T.A. want to justify themselves by denying protein to others.  Our fallen bodies now need protein, and they sweat, and get sick.  Would P.E.T.A. members kill fire ants, blood-sucking mosquitoes, pit vipers or other creatures that found their way into their beds at night?  Did these P.E.T.A members create such creatures? No, but they would swiftly destroy them without thinking.  Yet, they tell fellow humans to not kill animals which can be used to survive on this planet.  Is not their sin the very reason that these creepy, crawly, poisonous creatures are dangerous now?  Is not their sin the reason that animals must die?  GOD created all things perfect.

Count Your Many Blessings5The fallen creation groans under the burden of the curse of sin.  We are the reason that Jesus had to die.  We are the reason that our pets sometimes die.  We are the reason that our family and friends sometimes die.  We all are the reason.  We are sinners.  We are given a choice to follow GOD, but we refuse.  Only Jesus can redeem us, but even that Truth is not a right, but a privilege.  Romans 2 says conscience testifies against us that we are doing wrong, but we still do it.  Romans 1:20 says Creation proves there is a Creator, yet people still ignore the Creator, and so people are without excuse on Judgment Day.

“For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”   – Romans 8:19-23

Count Your Many Blessings4Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, because of the just pain and curse on our lives, we should count our blessings, and determine in our hearts that we will be a blessing to others and their lives.

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”

In the video mentioned earlier in this article, you will see a final argument made by a pitiful atheist who was seeking to justify his own iniquitous life.   Ray Comfort gives the atheist $100, because he is unable to answer the atheist’s question or perhaps more likely because he knows that this atheist would never agree with the explanation. The Bible says the chief priests took the money provided by Judas’ betrayal and purchased a field in Matthew 27. The atheist quotes Acts 1:18 stating that Judas purchased the field, and not the chief priests in hopes of creating a contradiction.

The atheist has not the Spirit of GOD, but he studies the Bible.  Why?  I believe it is to justify himself, but all of that work to justify himself is useless.  GOD sees his heart.

“A scorner seeks wisdom, and finds it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understands.”   – Proverbs 14:6

judas iscariotThis atheist will still find himself eternally damned without the redemption that Jesus can provide. The verse in Acts 1 that the atheist references in the video says: “Now this man [Judas] purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.” However, if the priests couldn’t legally accept the money that Judas gave them under the Law and they couldn’t add it to the temple treasury, then how do you think these greedy men could have still benefited from the money?  Remember how Jesus scolded such men for robbing widows? The chief priests had only one option in order to circumvent the law.  They had to invest the money, and make the purchase in the name of the donor (in this case in the name of Judas).   Judas probably felt justified when he first betrayed Jesus.  I’m sure he doesn’t now.   This atheist most likely felt justified, not because he had the true answers, but because Ray couldn’t answer him immediately.   Ray was caught without an answer {which is rare}, but I believe that GOD may have even been in this situation.  It probably challenged Ray, who loves the Bible, to dig deeper into the Word, and it allowed the atheist to walk away feeling justified and sink deeper into his depravity.

john 3-16GOD knows hearts and He has His purposes. He hardens the heart of Pharaoh. Jesus said things that were difficult to understand (purposefully) which resulted in some of his disciples no longer following Him. GOD is trying our hearts. He wants only those who love and trust Him in heaven forever. The rest will be damned justly for their depravity. That’s why he doesn’t give chapters and verses on every thing we debate today from music to theology. There’s a reason Jesus said that certain men with whom He was discussing theology had erred not knowing the Scriptures or the power of GOD. We need the Spirit, as well as the Bible.  Those who reject Him will be unable to fully understand the Scriptures and they will be less likely to seek out the historical background of a Biblical passage, but will instead only read enough to justify themselves.  Without the Spirit, they are truly hopeless and helpless.

If you have heard the good Word of GOD and its message of redemption, and if you have the Holy Spirit, count your many blessing today.   Let’s also be a blessing to those around us who have never heard redemption’s story.  Many will walk away justified, but some will believe.
